How an eight-week pilot moved maths mastery and gave teachers back their evenings.
Bronberg College is a secondary school in Pretoria East serving around 600 learners across Grades 8 to 12. The mathematics department has six teachers covering the FET and GET phases. Before the pilot, the department relied on textbooks, shared past papers, and handwritten preparation — each teacher spending an average of nine hours per week on lesson planning and resource creation.
The department faced two pressures at once. Maths pass rates in Grade 9 had plateaued below the provincial average, and teachers were spending more time preparing materials than they spent on the interventions that actually move learners. The HOD wanted a way to see, at a glance, which topics each class had mastered and which still needed attention — without waiting for end-of-term results.
Bronberg ran an eight-week pilot across two grades. Teachers used four PPMA features throughout:
Teachers opened the mastery heatmap weekly to see exactly which topics each learner had mastered, was developing, or was still weak on — and grouped learners for the next lesson accordingly.
CAPS-aligned lessons were generated in under two minutes and then adapted by the teacher. The eight-block structure (KUD, vocabulary, theory, worked examples, practice, visuals, differentiation, assessment) meant every lesson arrived classroom-ready.
The platform sequenced the term's lessons against the CAPS pacing and flagged topics that had fallen behind. Teachers used the recovery plan to catch up without losing the curriculum spine.
When a learner scored below the mastery threshold on an assessment, the agent generated a targeted revision pack and a one-page intervention plan the teacher could deliver in the next lesson.
Figures below were recorded during the eight-week pilot and reviewed with the school's HOD.
